Freiburg im Breisgau is an incredibly beautiful university town and, due to its special location, has numerous attractive activities to offer. On the one hand, there are of course many sights in the city itself. But the excellent location directly on the Black Forest also delights nature lovers from all over the world. In addition, the neighboring countries France and Switzerland are only a short drive away. This means you can visit several exciting destinations in one weekend.

So if you decide to go on a weekend trip to Freiburg, you should organize nice and central accommodation in advance. The symbol of the city is the imposing Freiburg Minster, a huge Gothic style cathedral. It is located right in the center of the beautiful old town and enchants visitors from all over the world. Right next to it there are numerous other sights on Münsterplatz with its historic buildings. The historic department store is located directly opposite the cathedral on the southern side. On the northern side, on the other hand, the lively Münstermarkt takes place, which attracts visitors with its local specialties.

In the immediate vicinity are also the beautiful Bertoldsbrunnen and the Martinstor and the Schwabentor. They are all within walking distance, making them perfect for exploring on a sunny afternoon. Those interested in culture, on the other hand, can admire numerous historical exhibits in the nearby Augustinian Museum. Other highlights include the Bächle and the Schlossberg, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city.

Explore the Black Forest

Nature lovers must of course visit the Black Forest. Hardly any other place in Germany can inspire with such a dense forest that exudes its unique charm in all seasons. In summer the lush green dominates, in winter it is often covered in bright white snow. The many hiking trails and the natural landscapes worth seeing inspire even hikers from all over the world.

Particular highlights include the Triberg waterfalls and the Baumwipfelpfad in the north of the Black Forest. Also the imposing one Wutach Gorge knows how to inspire and is a unique experience, especially in summer. Then the fauna really comes into its own and the clear water reflects the sun's rays back in a wonderful way. All this creates an almost picturesque overall picture that you should definitely have seen.

Visit Colmar and Strasbourg

With Colmar and Strasburg two of the most beautiful cities in France are also in the immediate vicinity of Fribourg. The journey to Colmar takes just an hour and is relatively easy to cover even on a busy weekend. The city itself is known for its gorgeous half-timbered houses and exudes a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. In the district of Little Venice there are also many beautiful canals and bridges that are perfect for a snapshot.

A little further north is Strasbourg, which can also be reached in just under an hour by car. Similar to Freiburg, an imposing cathedral adorns the center of the city: the Strasbourg Cathedral. In addition, there is also a wonderful old town to explore in Strasbourg, which is characterized by small, charming streets and magnificent half-timbered buildings. Another highlight can be the local French cuisine, whose excellent reputation is known worldwide.

Switzerland is also not far away

But not only France is a short drive away, but also beautiful Switzerland. You can also get there within an hour Basel. The historic city with its almost 2000-year history still inspires thanks to the numerous buildings. But it is also known above all as a museum and cultural city, with many sights that are dedicated to this very topic. With the Art Museum, the Jean Tinguely Museum and the Basel Paper Mill, there are three world-renowned museums.

With the Basel Minster, there is once again a breathtaking cathedral in the heart of the city, just as one is almost used to from the region. Other highlights of the beautiful old town include the colorful town hall and the Tinguely fountain. But Basel also has a large exhibition center and numerous smaller museums to offer. This makes a trip highly recommended, especially for culture-loving explorers.

Europa-Park in Rust as a highlight for families

But Freiburg is also the ideal starting point to visit the exciting Europa-Park in Rust. The small town and amusement park is halfway to the aforementioned Strasburg and can be reached in just 30 minutes. A visit can be a great experience, especially for families, as the park has plenty of attractions for young and old alike. So parents can have as much fun as their young children.

Last year alone, the amusement park six million visitors attract from all over the world. It is one of the most popular in the world and second only to Disneyland Paris in Europe. There are a total of 18 themed areas and over 100 different attractions, so visitors never get bored. There is also a good program for adults, who can even retreat to one of the bars and relax if necessary.
