How is the Titisee located

Surrounded by wooded slopes, Lake Titisee is framed by the Feldberg massif and the Hochfirst. It receives its water directly from the Seebach from the Feldberg. The Seebach rises at the Seebuck, the summit of the Feldberg. In its function as the outflow of the Feldsee, which lies directly at the foot of the mountain, the Seebach continuously feeds Lake Titisee. This supports the consistently high water quality of the lake. The water stream leaves the lake as the Gutach. Along its course, the stream joins the Haslach below the municipality of Kappel, finally flowing as Wutach to flow into the Upper Rhine.

Who gave the Titisee its name

There are various theories about the lake's name. A well-known legend states that the Roman general Titus discovered the lake on his way through the Black Forest and gave it his name. However, historians suspect a connection with the Old Germanic word "titinesse," which means "still, calm water." The lake's first documented mention dates back to 1050.

Over the centuries, Lake Titisee developed from a remote forest area into a popular tourist destination. With the expansion of the railway line in the 19th century, the lake became more accessible to visitors, laying the foundation for today's tourism.

Formation of the lake

It originated in the Ice Age (Pleistocene) as a moraine - water of the former Feldberg – Glacier, Lake Titisee today forms a prominent part of the landscape of the High Black Forest. The Seebach River flows through the lake, which later flows into the Wutach River.
