Smallest imperial city with “rooster and hen”

Not far from the French border there is a small community with a past steeped in history - the former imperial city of Zell am Harmersbach. It was first mentioned in a document around 1139

History to experience - wonderful times in Zell am Harmersbach

Today the municipality is mainly known for its half-timbered and Art Nouveau houses, its churches and museums. The residential and commercial buildings, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, as well as
Parts of the old city walls have survived city fires and wars and are still inhabited and farmed today.

The numerous museums in the city can be explored inexpensively with the museum pass and there is definitely something for everyone here:

  • In the almost 700-year-old stork tower, the old tower keeper's room, the city's sinners used to be kept safe
  • the "Fürstenberger Hof" from the 17th century was farmed until the 70s and today serves as a local history museum and wedding location
  • for motorcycle enthusiasts, we recommend Breig's Motorcycle and Toy Museum, which has more than 2000 tin exhibits and over 180 working motorcycles spanning almost 100 years
  • The "Villa Haiss" invites art-loving visitors - here over 120 art objects, paintings and sculptures from all over the world and from the more than 60 years are shown
  • the Zeller ceramic manufactory, with a tradition going back more than 200 years, has made the community well-known beyond the borders of the region with its “rooster and hen” motif
  • Music and instrument lovers can't help but be amazed at Hans Stadelmann and his "Accordion and Harmonica Museum" - over the years he has collected over 530 different organs, harmonicas, accordions and audio players
