Hiking in the Black Forest – the most beautiful routes for extraordinary outdoor experiences

Content:

With its romantic coniferous forests, green valleys, and rolling hills, the Black Forest is a true hiker's paradise. Numerous hiking trails wind their way through Germany's largest low mountain range, such as the famous Schluchtensteig (Gorge Trail) or the picturesque Teinacher Wanderweg (Teinach Hiking Trail). Those seeking exciting outdoor adventures should be well-prepared.

Observe the wildlife and explore the starry sky

The network of hiking trails comprises more than 24.000 kilometers of well-marked paths. From easy beginner routes to challenging long-distance trails, there's something for everyone. Discovering the beautiful nature of the Black Forest on foot is a truly special experience. Observing the local wildlife, including chamois and shy lynx, is an essential part of a true outdoor adventure. A peregrine falcon is best spotted from a distance with binoculars. Binoculars are also helpful when gazing at the night sky with its many glittering stars. Those hiking at night should carry a flashlight for safety. The light provides orientation and prevents tripping over stones or tree roots. Outdoor equipment experts like knivesandtools test their products themselves first to ensure their quality and functionality. Especially on longer hikes, the hiking backpack shouldn't be too heavy. Proper weight distribution is crucial for carrying comfort on the trail. Heavy loads belong in the main compartment, while lighter items should be stored at the bottom of the backpack. Items that need to be quickly accessible when required are placed at the very top in the lid compartment.

Hike to the summit along shepherds' paths

The Black Forest boasts so many hiking trails that choosing can be difficult. Which is the most beautiful route? The Black Forest Shepherd's Trail, considered a hike for connoisseurs, or the Feldberg Trail, which leads to the highest point in the Black Forest? At just under eight kilometers long, the Shepherd's Trail is one of the easier hikes. The starting point is near the village of Feldberg . From there, the trail leads through densely wooded forests and past green mountain meadows. On clear days, the outlines of the Alps are even visible. Also starting in the village of Feldberg is the Feldberg Trail, a certified premium hiking trail . The highlight of this 13-kilometer loop is the climb to the highest mountain in Baden-Württemberg. The panoramic view from the summit of the 1.493-meter-high Feldberg is breathtaking and stretches as far as the Vosges Mountains in the west and the Alps to the south.

Glacial lakes and moors – experience the beautiful nature of the Black Forest

Idyllic landscapes and viewpoints await hikers on the Schluchsee Hunter's Trail. The trail begins as a narrow path that climbs steeply in places to the summit, offering stunning views of Lake Schluchsee . Back in the valley, the route follows a lakeside path, providing equally breathtaking views of the largest lake in the Black Forest. During the summer months, it's worth bringing your swimsuit. Near the trail, there are several small coves that are perfect for a refreshing dip in the deep blue glacial lake. A contrasting experience awaits hikers on the mystical High Moor Trail. This nearly three-kilometer-long path leads through the high moor near Hinterzarten . On foggy days or during light rain, the mysterious atmosphere of the landscape is palpable. Legend has it that moss men and other mythical creatures haunt the area. However, these are likely the wooden moor guardians created by the sculptor Thomas Rees.
