The Albtalbahn is a railway line from Karlsruhe via Ettlingen to Bad Herrenalb with a branch line to Ittersbach, which originally continued to Pforzheim. Since it was linked to the Karlsruhe tram network, it has formed the cornerstone of the Karlsruhe light rail network and was a model for linking regional railway lines with urban tram systems in other European cities.
