Hans Thoma (1839–1924), one of Germany's most famous and popular painters at the end of the 19th century, is in Bernau-Oberlehen born and raised. Like no other great artist, he was impressed and influenced by his native landscape, and with his naturalistic landscape depictions and motifs from rural life, he initially stood in opposition to the prevailing conception of art. His pictures were strictly rejected for two decades until he achieved his breakthrough with an exhibition in Munich in 1890. As a recognized artist, he was appointed director of the Grand Ducal Art Academy in Karlsruhe in 1899.

With oil paintings, graphics, arts and crafts and life documents, Mayor Dr. Ludwig Baur founded Hans-Thoma-Museum gives an insight into the extensive and varied work of Hans Thomas.
