Located at an altitude of 1321 meters southwest of the Feldberg summit, the Todtnauer Hütte is one of the most traditional mountain huts in the Black Forest. Today, it operates as a mountain inn with a guesthouse, offering hikers, skiers, and nature lovers an ideal starting point for their activities in the Feldberg region.

Accommodation and gastronomy

The Todtnauer Hütte's restaurant serves regional specialties and caters to guests' culinary needs. A rich breakfast buffet is offered each morning to ensure a full start to the day. The menu features traditional Black Forest dishes made with fresh, local ingredients.

The Berggasthof zur Todtnauer Hütte mountain inn offers its guests comfortable, cozy rooms. Each room features a wardrobe, a TV, and a private bathroom with bed linen and towels. The furnishings are in typical Black Forest style, creating a cozy atmosphere.

The hut is only about 150m from the Westweg route away and is therefore also ideal for Westweg hikers.

History of the Todtnauer Hütte

Development into a mountain inn

When the Herderhaus burned down in the early 1930s, the city built Todtnau In its place, a spacious guesthouse was built. This was expanded in 1958 with a guesthouse directly adjacent to the old building. In 1975, the Bundeswehr took over the property. From 1976, the Training Company 2/10 used the hut for winter combat and fighter training of the 10th Panzer Division.

The Todtnauer Hut also served as accommodation for soldiers of the Army Sports Group and the Southern Sports Promotion Group. Notable members included ski jumpers Sven Hannawald, Christof Duffner, and Hansjörg Jäkle. As part of the base rationalization program, the Bundeswehr abandoned the hut in 1999.

From 1995 to 2020, the Todtnauer Hütte was managed by the Gröbler family. In 2001, the property was divided: one half was demolished and renaturalized, and the other half was purchased from the then tenant, Horst Gröbler. Since 2022, the new owners, Philipp Saier and Franjo Roso, have continued to run the hut as a mountain inn with a guesthouse.
