Hiking in autumn - what's in your luggage

Autumn is just around the corner and with it the golden season. It promises a very special hiking experience. The Black Forest is now showing itself in its very diverse and most beautiful facets. Here you can stroll through lonely forests, past gorges, waterfalls and lakes and enjoy great views again and again. With over 24.000 km of hiking trails, the Black Forest is one of the largest and most popular hiking regions in Germany. The diverse offer ranges from a sporty summit ascent to a gorge hike to an extraordinary waterfall tour. Consequently every hiking fan will find a suitable route in the Black Forest for themselves. The southern Black Forest attracts with many high-altitude hiking areas. The nature park has a total of 8300 km of signposted hiking trails with very different requirements. In autumn the visitor experiences a very unique flora and fauna here.

The most beautiful hiking trails in autumn

One of the most famous hiking routes in the Black Forest is the Feldbergsteig. Via the Grüblesattel one comes on the route to the 1493 meter high Feldberg. Once up here you have a magnificent view as far as the Vosges and, in very clear autumn weather, even as far as the Alps. The oldest long-distance hiking trail in the Black Forest is the Westweg. It starts in Basel and goes over a length of 280 kilometers past the Black Forest western slope to Pforzheim. Another long-distance hiking trail that attracts many hikers in autumn is the Schluchtensteig. It leads over 119 kilometers through the southern Black Forest. Unique to the week-long hiking tour are the breathtaking waterfalls along the way and the varied valley landscapes. The Kaiserstuhlpfad is one of the most beautiful hiking routes in autumn. The hiking trail extends over a length of 22 kilometers. Usually there is still thick fog at the beginning, but after a few meters you will be rewarded with a great, clear view. From the summit, the Totenkopf (557 meters), the view extends to the Alps. Then it goes downhill through the famous vineyards, where you can find a colorful spectacle in autumn.

What belongs in the luggage

With the right equipment in your luggage, every hike becomes a sense of achievement, even in autumnal weather. In the mountains in particular, the weather can change quickly due to the weather and appropriate equipment is then necessary. When packing the hiking backpack, you should always consider the weight. When buying hiking equipment, it is therefore advisable to attach great importance to weight and functionality. The most important piece of luggage in the hiking suitcase is the hiking boots. They should be run in well and appropriate to the touring terrain. Proper hiking boots are usually only necessary for summit tours. For all other hiking routes, light hiking shoes are usually sufficient.

The most important items of clothing for a hiking tour include hiking trousers, a functional shirt, a fleece jacket and hiking socks. Hikers should go for autumn also put on a weatherproof rain jacket. Furthermore, rain pants, sun hat and glasses and a hiking stick are an advantage. The hiking luggage also includes sunscreen, first aid kit, a hiking map, a compass, a camera and a pocket knife. A GPS device and binoculars can also be useful on the hike.

The Black Forest attracts visitors in autumn with a great natural spectacle. Very different hiking tours are available at this beautiful time of year.
