From Freiburg Coming we start the tour in Staufen ... the "Fausstädtchen" in a sheltered location on one of the last foothills of the Black Forest. According to legend, the devil kidnapped Faust here in 1529 – the scene was No. 5 in the “Gasthaus zum Löwen”; market square with fountain and town hall (1546), small ceramics museum; Starting point of the "Wiiwegli" hiking trail; Staufen castle ruins

via Grunern and Ballrechte-Dottingen to Sulzburg

... the oldest town in the Markgräflerland known for its St. Cyriak Church (993), Baden-Württemberg mining museum, hiking trail with a history of mining

back via Britzingen to Müllheim

... the center of the Markgräflerland, Markgräfler wine and local history museum in the former inn "Zur Krone" (1780)

via Auggen to Schliengen

... with the moated Entenstein castle (1407) in an English park -

today's town hall!

and on to Bad bellingen

... which only became a bathing resort in 1955, when oil was drilled at a depth of 629m for mineral

and hot springs came across! Upper Rhine Baths and Local History Museum; fully functional "Schmiede Berger" (1880)

via Hertingen, Ettingen, Rietlingen to Kandern

... the city of potters and pretzels! Archaeological finds suggest that the

by the river Kander was already settled in the times of the Celts.

via Sitzenkirch (Schloss Bürgeln!), Schallsingen and Sehringen Badenweiler

... located in a valley of the southern Black Forest with a view of the Rhine plain

and the Vosges! Bathing resort in the midst of orchards and vineyards, thermal springs, spa park with ruins of the Roman baths and castle ruins

Via Schweighof, Heubronn and Untermünstertal (St. Trudpert Abbey!) back to Staufen

And late summer, when the light gets that peculiar sheen that goes so well with the plump vineyards and the view over the Rhine plain, is perhaps the most beautiful season for this tour ...!
