Many tourists come to the Black Forest region every year to discover its impressive natural beauty while hiking. While everyday clothing is sufficient for a shorter walk on paved paths, hikers on challenging tours need suitable equipment and must also prepare properly, as hiking can involve some risks.
Why is clothing so important?
Hiking in the Black Forest is popular with people of all ages. Those who decide to explore the picturesque landscapes on foot must first choose the right footwear. Which models and styles are suitable depends largely on the planned route. If the hike will be exclusively on paved paths without steep inclines, comfortable sports or outdoor shoes will suffice. However, if rocky and uneven forest trails are also planned, cushioned, slip-resistant, and waterproof trekking shoes are recommended to relieve pressure on the feet and provide the necessary support. The same applies to the rest of the clothing. Regular men's shirts for everyday wear or even men's jeans from PME Legend are suitable for short excursions on paved paths and, of course, in good weather. However, if the hike leads into higher mountainous terrain or if bad weather is forecast, hikers need appropriate clothing. This should be breathable to wick away moisture from the body, ensuring dry skin and a comfortable feel. Furthermore, it is advisable to wear windproof and weatherproof clothing, as weather conditions, especially in the mountains, can change rapidly. It is not uncommon for hikers to set off in sunshine only to be surprised by wind and rain. Experts therefore recommend, not only for multi-day tours, choosing specialized hiking clothing and, if necessary, packing a change of clothes.
Preparing for longer tours: less is (not always) more
If a hike is planned for several days, naturally significantly more luggage is required. Besides sufficient clothing, this often includes a tent for overnight stays, as well as a sleeping bag and a sleeping mat to protect against cold and damp ground. Hikers in the Black Forest should ensure that their overall luggage isn't too heavy, as it will have to be carried on their backs the entire time. In addition to the actual equipment, food and drink are also essential. Even if there are places to stop for refreshments along the way, it's crucial to always carry enough water and food. Potential dehydration during the hike can be a particular problem: adequate hydration is vital, and not just during the warmer summer days. Before packing their backpacks and setting off, hikers are also well advised to check the forecast. Based on the current prediction, they can then choose the appropriate clothing for the trip. Of course, a (charged) mobile phone and at least one power bank must also be packed so that help can be summoned in an emergency. Experts advise especially inexperienced hikers not to venture into the Black Forest lightly, but to start with easy routes and/or join an experienced person: This way, it can be ensured that the visit to the Black Forest will truly be a pleasure.
